Subterranean Termites

* Geography: Subterranean termites are the most commonly seen termite pest in the United States.

* Habitat: As their name suggests, subterranean termites build their nests in the earth. Because all you need to do is make sure that nothing made from wood on your home is in direct contact with-the ground, this make prevention a bit easier for this species. They get for the wood around the house through mud tubes that go from their nest.

* Appearance: There are four distinct types of subterranean termites; the winged reproducers, queen, soldiers, and workers. Workers are what cause the damage to your house; they are white with dark heads and about 1/2 an inch long. Soldiers are a bit large, black, and have elongated heads. Reproducers are winged and black, and could be the first indication that there’s a problem in your home. You’ll never see a full fledged queen until you find the nest; she is large and white, like a maggot, but with a termite head.

Damp wood Termites

* Geography: Dampwood termites live up and down the West Coast.

* Habitat: Dampwood termites nest in wood, and as their name indicates they favor that it’s kept rather moist.

* Appearance: Dampwood termites have reproducers, soldiers, the queen, and only three types. Additionally it is the soldiers who do the injury to your home.

* Treatment: The best method to treat dampwood termites is always to {dry out wet wood and replace it. They can’t live without the wetness, and will soon die. It is never needed to spray for this particular species.

Dry Wood Termites

* Geography: Drywood termites are seen in southern, coastal regions of the state.

* Habitat: Drywood termites can live in any sort of wood, and don’t need to possess their nests in contact with the ground either.

* Appearance: As with subs, there are four different kinds of drywood termite, and in general they possess the same look. The difference is in size, with drywoods being in between subs and <>dampwoods.
